My earliest recollection of the south, was not even with the states themselves, but rather the people. The families we traveled with were from all over the U.S., but the first time I heard my friends from Louisiana, say, "y'all" at the age of 6, I didn't understand why those kids spoke so funny. "Funny" is how I would describe the Southern accent then, "mesmerizing" is how I describe it today. I don't know about you, but I could listen to that drawl for hours.
No matter what state we headed to that summer, what I looked froward to the most was visiting my friends from the South. As the business group grew and new families joined from other states, I started noticing the names. I had new friends with initials for names and the girls went by their first and middle names. I guess this was something that really struck me because if someone calls my son Ryan, I have no idea whom they are addressing, my son is RJ!
It's not just the names and accents that draw me to the Southern states, it is the lightning bugs, lemonade on the front porch, Georgia peaches, "pocket books", Spanish moss on oak trees, their hospitality and love for family tradition, magnolia trees, shutters and the way Southern Belles can make such a snide comment that comes off as sweet as their tea. BUT there is nothing, I mean nothing, more fascinating to me than a Southern Wedding!
Each Sunday, the ladies over here at Table7 plan to feature Southern Weddings on our blog with a California girl perspective / longing to be part of their culture and traditions. It may be current Southern wedding trends, a book or movie review on the topic, or maybe even a touch of etiquette. Whatever the topic may be, we are excited to start digging in! See y'all next Sunday!
