Holiday Party: Candy Cane Christmas Decorations, Hosted by McCoy Mills Ford, Fullerton, CA | Table7 Events

My love for stripes has never been a secret, so of course I am naturally drawn to the candy cane during the holidays.  I found some fun ways to incorporate the tasty little peppermint cane into this holiday party.

Drink recipe plus a few decor tips and tricks I used below...

DIY:  Crushed Peppermint Votives...
I like to experiment!  Sometimes my ideas work, sometimes I fail, but I think this one was a success.  I had recently done glittered votives, so I decided to try it with crushed candy cane.  I bought some inexpensive clear glass votives, lightly brushed them with slightly watered down tacky glue and rolled them in the candy cane.  Something a little different and unexpected.  You can see the votive in the photo above and I also got a bit adventurous and dipped the corner of the "signature drink" frame at the top.  *A little warm water and the glue and mints came right off, so we can reuse everything.

The Christmas tree at McCoy Mills Ford was all jewel toned when I arrived.  I kept anything silver and red on the tree, added a few large ornaments along with the candy canes to tie in the rest of the decor.

Fact:  Only 10% of your guests will remember the details!  What they will remember is the food, so it is always wise to put a good portion of your budget and energy toward creating the menu.

Peppermint Pina Colada:
3 oz.  Canned Coconut Milk
1 oz.  Pineapple Juice
1 1/2 oz.  White Rum
2  Candy Canes
Fresh Mint for Garnish

Directions:  In a shaker, combine coconut milk, pineapple juice and rum with ice.  Crush one of the candy canes and place in the glass, then pour the colada mixture into the glass.  (This will give the drink the light pink color.)  Garnish with fresh mint and a full candy cane.
*This is best made as a batch drink ahead of time with the crushed peppermint melting ahead of time to create the right color.

Now that the economy is back on track, corporate events are on the rise.  Like most businesses, McCoy Mills Ford had gotten away from the extravagant, off-site employee holiday party.  For the past 10 years they have kept it simple, opting for a casual on-site luncheon for their employees.  They wanted to take a small step toward bringing back the employee party, yet they were hesitant to take that bounding leap back to a hotel.  We talked about all sorts of middle ground, like a Sunday brunch, an affordable banquet hall or community center, but yet, still reluctant to take that step.

McCoy Mills ultimately felt more comfortable hosting the event at the business, but chose to have a dinner and invite the spouses.  I knew the employees were hopeful of getting their party back, so I needed to transform the showroom floor and make them feel like they were not at work.

The challenge was to figure out how to transform the stark, florescent space without going to crazy with the cost.  I am a huge fan of ceiling decor which I actually prefer to tabletop decor.  Hanging items eliminates a ton of clutter on the table and gives the room added dimension.  Plus, it is just plain fun!  I found these incredibly budget friendly snowflakes and went from there.

The following photos are the room before the fluorescent were turned off...

Lights off and you can almost see the room transform.  The comment I kept hearing repeated, "I don't even feel like I am at work!"  Mission Accomplished!!!

DIY Tip:  The votives are from Candles4Less.  I used watered-down tacky glue, brushed it on the outer rim of the votive and dipped it in a mixture of silver and gold glitter.  For the pillar candles, those came from the 99 cent store, and then I used a 7" long piece of 4" wide ribbon to wrap each candle then secured the ribbon with hot glue.

A wedding on Father's Day may not be ideal, but for Alicia and Greg it was perfect.  Greg has two little men in his life and Alicia, two little ladies in hers, so the joining of these two families was the perfect Father's Day gift.

I have a special place in my heart for couples that involve their children in the wedding because it's no longer just about them, they are creating a new family.  I was once in their shoes when my son and I "got married."  At least that is what my three year old called it when I married my husband and he was right there with us.  This first look brought back so many memories, times four kiddos of course.

I have to share a little inside joke.  Greg is a firefighter, which made this a firehouse wedding, which made this the opportunity for firehouse pranks.  What you cannot see, is the backside of this cake.  The fireman have made a practice of "coring / holing" I don't remember the exact terminology, but they take a water glass, champagne flute, etc. and shove it into the base of the cake and pull it out creating a tunnel in the cake.  I was warned about this, I was waiting for it, but somehow it happened.  Here's a link the the instagram shot I took:  steph_table7events

And they lived happily ever after...

Meet Shannon Scurrah: Team7 | Table7 Events

Location:  HILLCREST PARK, FULLERTON
Event Coordinator:  TABLE7 EVENTS, INC.

Meet Shannon Scurrah, Event Assistant at Table7 Events, Inc.:

Style and Personality:  The smile Shannon is always wearing says it all.  She is very approachable and easy going, just the way she lives her life.  Another county music loving camper in the mix, she feels right at home with weddings in the wilderness surrounded by nature.

Ideal Event:  Deep in the south, with a big red barn, family and friends are line-dancing and everyone is having a good ol’ time.  A ton of flowers is a must!

Favorite Wedding Moment:  Seeing how the bride emotionally transforms from morning to night.  Some are nervous others excited, but they all have a glow that they carry throughout the day.  Whatever emotion they are feeling seems to build throughout the day until they see their groom and finally get to exhale.  That emotion seems to change at that point as all of their plans are falling into place.

My Life / Professional:  Shannon is a college student enjoying every opportunity she is given! “Seeing a wedding come together is such a blessing and I am so thankful to be a part of it, but I know that my heart is leading me to work with children.”  Due to her love and compassion for young children, Shannon is studying child development in hopes that it will lead her to a career in teaching.  We can’t leave out that she also works for Chick-Fil-A.  You can occasionally catch a glimpse of that amazing smile in the drive-thru.

Orange County Fair: 3rd Place Winner, Table-Setting Competition 2013 | Table7 Events

Location:  ORANGE COUNTY FAIR
Table-Setting and Design:  TABLE7 EVENTS, INC.

My journey to a ribbon at the Orange County Fair started a few years ago when I discovered the "Table-Setting" competition.  I had no idea that such a thing existed, but was drawn to the creativity and beauty like so many others.  This year I decided to give it a try, but I had no idea what I was in for.

Some may think it is unfair that I entered the table-setting competition because I am a "professional."  I create tablescapes as part of my career as an event designer and know a thing or two about etiquette as a wedding coordinator, but I was unaware of that "Modern American Standards" in setting a place for a meal existed.  I cannot fathom setting 200 place settings at a wedding with such criteria.  Yes, forks go on the left and glasses on the right, but who knew that your flatware should be set 1 inch from the edge of the table and your coffee mug's handle turned at a 45 degree angle?  Obviously, the people entering this competition.

The theme I decided on was "Get Away Adventure" and my mind went straight to the bay.  The creative part I had no problem with, especially thanks to Pinterest and some very excited employees.  Here is the link to Table7 Event's "Dock of the Bay" Pinterest Board.

"Dock of the Bay" Tablescape by Stephanie Hassan of Table7 Events:

Since the design was a no-brainer, I put all of my energy into learning about the judging criteria.  First step, the linen!  I had navy blue and white stripes running through my mind and I couldn't find a tablecloth or fabric anywhere.  You will never guess what I found walking through the aisles of  Target?  A shower curtain!!!  I believe in serendipitous moments, and when I threw it on the table it fell perfectly on three of the four sides with the stripes falling exactly at the edge.  I only had to hem the side with the shower rod holes.  Who knew?  Now you all do.  Another plus, I didn't have to worry about the wrinkle factor much!

Before I could work on the layout, I had to choose a menu.  The tableware had to correspond to the courses and set properly.  This was a fairly easy task, but the judging criteria was pretty strict on what should and should not be set.  For example, if coffee service was listed on the menu, there must be a coffee mug on the table.

Next I worked on the placement of the flatware and tableware.  This was my biggest challenge because I had large plates and they took up quite a bit of the 48 inches of length I had.  Thankfully, I chose to go with the informal setting which does not allow for chargers and saved about 4 inches total, so I could snuggly fit the centerpiece I decided on.  Like I said, placement is key in the judging criteria.  The plates had to be directly in the middle and 1 inch from the edge.  Then the flatware had to be in a line, also 1 inch from the table's edge and also 1 inch from the plate.  It was really like a math problem, but I will let you in on a secret, those stripes really helped!

Finally, the centerpiece!  This is where I got a little confused when it came to what was expected on paper vs. at the actual competition.  The directions clearly state "decorations should usually be below eye level, and or not obstructive for diners."  Also, "centerpieces may be scaled for a larger table, but cannot deter from the overall effect, the guests comfort, or the service of the meal."  I think there is a bit more wiggle room when it comes to the judging of this element.

My style is elegant and simplistic.  Some fun elements that I used were "driftwood" which I couldn't get my hands on, so I found some grapevine, fisherman's netting, starfish and I love sailor's knots.  This one is a figure 8 knot (too bad someone hasn't figured out how to tie a "7").   My husband loved the "menu in a bottle", get it?  The votives were a Pinterest DIY, my favorite detail.

A quick "how-to" on the votives:  I went to market, bought some clams, boiled them (our doggies had a new treat), and bleached the shells so they wouldn't stink (the clam shells, not the dogs).  Then stopped at the craft store to buy some simple candle making supplies which consisted of melting wax, inserting a wick, pouring the wax into the shell and letting it harden.  I think they are fantastic!

The judging comments I received were very positive, but when one of the judges commented on the seahorse butter knife, I knew they really were drawn to "themey" aspects of the decor.  Not so much my style, but if I enter in the future, I will be more aware of what they look for.

Overall, such a fun experience!  My family was so proud of me when they walked into the building and saw my ribbon sitting on the table.  I am pretty proud of myself too and one more thing I get to check off the bucket list.
