This environmentally conscious couple wanted to incorporate their love for nature, adventure, and family into a four-day weekend filled with an upscale camp experience. The fall hues imprinted upon the wood envelopes and sustainable stationary were the first glimpse of this woodsy wedding.  The vision for their wedding was to utilize the surroundings by repurposing as much as possible. 

The earth was raked into piles of decaying needles and twigs, then topped with organic moss and collected pinecones to create the aisle.  The benches from the lodge were brought into the forest for the ceremony, and topped with cones of dried lavender.  For the altar table, we located a large stump in the woods and rolled it over to use for their tree planting ceremony.

Varying sizes of rocks, juniper, pinecones, twigs, bark and berries were gathered to create both the guest sign-in table and the table for the escort card display.  Cocktail hour was held near the stream while the guests sipped on a lavender batch cocktail created by the groom’s work associates from the Roy’s/Flemings bartending team while an Irish folk band played. 

The wedding moved to the front of the camp’s main lodge, which was strung with market lights and uplit redwood trees.  The tri-tip was so mouthwatering the VP from Fleming’s Steakhouse asked the camp for the recipe (watch for it on the menu)!  My favorite piece we created was the stage.  We repurposed all of the umbrella stands (wooden stumps) and wove in the loose materials collected from the grounds along with lots of pillar candles.  The evening then moved to the campfire for an acoustic set and s’mores.  The newlyweds went back to their cabin to find their bed moved in front of a roaring fire surrounded by candlelight.

As a wedding planner, I am often invited to participate in bridal expos, but more often hesitant to do so.    

In the past I have done styled tables, DIY projects or a phenomenal backdrop.  The responses I get from brides vary: "I don't think I can afford you!", "Who did the flowers?", "Where can I get those chairs?", and the most common, "What do you do?"

Hearing that question, "What do I do?" over and over, show after show, I needed an answer that was straight and to the point, but what was it!  I can tell you about the endless tasks I do, the number of hours I put into an event, the countless contacts I have, but I have a matter of seconds to draw you in.

What can I do???  What "I" can do is SHOW YOU, what "I" do!!!  I am going to show you what I do from start to finish.  I am going to bring my studio to you in an 8x10 space and I am going to draw you in visually and mentally.  I am going to show you, as my bride, where you are standing right now with that sparkling diamond on your finger, where you will end up a year from now, and how it came together.

Let's start with the concept:

I wanted you to feel like you had stepped into my office; cozy, friendly, welcoming and feel like we were here to start planning your day.  

I decided to choose a wedding that I had done this year that had gotten a lot of buzz {Viceroy Palm Springs}, and SHOW YOU the process of planning a wedding.  Starting from the Pinterest board I had created with my couple, then the colors we choose, sample flower textures and other props, and bring it to current day, with the actual framed wedding photo the couple has hanging in their home.  Can you picture it yet?

In my imagination, {found} was written all over this project.  I took my drawing over to the {found} warehouse, held my breath in hopes they would not laugh at my artistry, and when both Jeni Maus and Lauren McWilliams' mouths' dropped, then looked at each other, I knew I had done something new and out-of-the-box.  They were just as excited as I was.  As we ventured through the warehouse and chose the items, everything started falling into place and I was anxious for the date to arrive.

Finally, it was January 26th and time to put this idea into action!  Here's the final product and it's exactly as I imagined.

I loved the bust!  I used it as a mock groom to create a vision of the bout and possible tie options.

Table7 had so many compliments on our set-up from bride's, their mothers and even other vendors that varied from, "You are different than anyone else here," to "That is completely my style, I love you guys!"  I am chalking this "new bridal booth" up to complete success!

I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to plan a special event for one of my corporate clients, McCoy Mills Ford, Fullerton, CA.  Not only was it their 75th Anniversary celebration, but the company was also receiving the 2011 President's Award for customer service.  So many people showed up to help celebrate:  Ford Motor Company representatives, City and State Dignitaries, Fullerton South Rotary, loyal customers, employees, but an extremely important figure in American history was a guest as well,  Mr. Henry Ford III.

 

Thank you to everyone that made this such a wonderful event!  Many of you went above and beyond to make this day special.

Remember back to the {Drew + Sarah} engagement blog when I stated, "the wedding will be one-of-a-kind with style, personality and a heck of a lot of fun?"  I could not have have said it any better!

It all started behind those yellow doors...

Keeping with the Hollywood Regency style of the hotel, which happens to be Drew and Sarah's as well, the event design process was straight forward which allowed for a lot of extra detail.  We stayed with the Viceroy's pop of yellow and took it throughout the event starting with the invitations.  Sorry, back that up, it all started with the canary diamond.

Keeping with the pop of yellow, Jenny B. kept the women's florals elegant and the men's boutonnieres modern using billy balls for the geometric aspect and a little succulent in keeping with the desert surroundings. 

First Look, First Glance, The Preview, etc...  Whatever you choose to call it, it is my favorite part of a wedding day.  Let me explain a bit.  There is nothing more romantic than locking eyes when you are walking down the aisle, but both bride and groom are so overwhelmed with all of their guests gazing, the vows they are about to recite and the commitment they are about to make.  It can sometimes take away from just stepping back, drinking each other in and sharing a quiet, special, private moment to exchange a few words, hugs, kisses, laughs, and usually a few tears.

The First Glance is a production in itself:  the stage has to be set, the cameras ready, the bride and groom positioned properly, and the timing has to be perfect to capture the emotions.  It never fails, my groom is usually a ball of nerves, my bride is smiling from ear to ear.

And then it happens...  You hear the breaths released, see their smiles grow (it is possible), and there is a need to touch each other and not let go.  My couples will never understand how honored I am that they allow me to experience this with them.  I asked Jenny B. to stay because she told me that she never gets to see this moment, so when it was over, I turned around to smile at her and her eyes were overflowing with tears.  I knew she was touched as well.


Even after the First Glance, it can sometimes be a little hard to recover, and pull yourself back into picture mode, but these are the personal moments couples that choose to go this route experience.

Details, Details...

A June wedding in Palm Springs may not be ideal for an outdoor venue, but always keep your guests needs in mind.  I do not recall the exact temperature, but the number 106 is coming to mind.  We, as in the hotel, Sarah, her parent's and myself made certain that our guests would be comfortable sitting outside in the late afternoon hours.  The Viceroy provided water and cool towels, Sarah and her mother furnished fans and parasols, Sarah's father brought in misters that dropped the temperature on the ceremony site by 20 degrees, and I made sure everyone was hydrated and in the shade until the last possible moment.

One of Sarah's first vendor choices was Phil Shane, a lounge entertainer that is pretty well known around the Southern California evening crowd.  She was a bit hesitant because he does not fit the traditional wedding band stereotype, but I assured her after seeing him that their guests would love him.  Sure enough, when Phil Shane stepped out to sing "Here Comes the Sun" all I heard was, "Is that Phil Shane?  Oh My God, it's Phil Shane!"  There was never a lull on the dance floor all night.

The only thing Drew and Sarah required of me was that I make sure that it was a party and lots of fun and I think we succeeded!

I forgot to mention Miss Penelope!  The sweetest little flower girl around!
